Shari Schabowski, MD
I am a retired Emergency Medicine physician who treated patients and trained residents, medical students, physician assistants, paramedics and nurses for 30 years at JHS Cook County Hospital. I loved my time teaching clinically and many of my students said that I was able to simplify concepts in a way they could easily understand, remember and apply. In the last 4 years, I have been working as an adjunct professor at Dominican University teaching histology and pathophysiology in the post baccalaureate program for medical sciences and I truly love it but I think I can do more.
My daughter and I both had negative experiences in the didactic years in medical school leaving us struggling and unhappy. 35 years apart we both felt we were simply inundated with details without an overall framework for application. I have trained more than 1000 very intelligent third year medical students who almost universally struggled to translate the huge amount of detail in their heads into clinical application. There is no reason for that. You pay a huge amount and give up so much for your education, you should be able to enjoy it. If only you could start with a basic understanding of the organ systems and how the sciences apply then you would be prepared and have a more enjoyable time in your medical professional school. I want to bridge that gap and do what I can to inspire the future of medicine.
